LTE Radio Over Cellular
Cellular LTE
Radio over LTE, or push to talk over cellular as its more commonly known. Are types of radios that use a sim card and cellular towers to provide long distance communication between devices. This means that as long as your device is connected buy Wi-Fi, or an LTE signal you can communicate with members of your group seamlessly without range limits. These types of radios aren't licensed, nor do they use repeaters like traditional radios. Instead, they rely on the already existing cellular network.
Setting up these "smart radios", as some people call them, are more involved then the other types of radios available. Think of them more closely related to smart phones then radios. They are controlled in much the same way. Like smartphones, these radios need a SIM card to function. This means they can be very expensive and difficult to set up on your own. Requiring servers and SIM card management software, this may be more than the average business or end user would want to take on.
Services already exist to help you with LTE radios should you or your business choose this route. In most cases it is very easy to get up and running. Usually the radios are ready to use right out of the box. Still allowing you to have multiple channels, or "talk groups" as their referred to when talking about these types of radios. The benefits don't stop there. LTE radios give you more control over your individual radios than other systems do. Much like a trunked system would, without the price tag. That being said, LTE radios aren't cheap and require an additional monthly fee for data, something regular analog and digital radios do not. However, they provide much more options then there traditional counterparts.
With LTE radios you are able to GPS locate individual radios on a map, remotely program settings and channels in individual devices, turn on and off Wi-Fi, and much more. This occurs all over the network, without the need to have physical possession of the unit.
